The PEN Project is one of three federally funded Parent Training and Information Centers (PTI) serving Texas parents of children and youth with disabilities ages 0-26.

Our mission is to empower parents of children and youth with disabilities in their roles as parents, decision makers, and advocates for their children. Our goal is to promote partnerships throughout the state among parents and professionals, parent organizations, school districts, and service agencies.

Are you passionate about helping other parents understand the ARD process? Then our Parent Leadership Training is for you!

What is Parent Leadership Training? Parent Leadership Training is a program designed specifically for parents of children with disabilities.  It is based on research and a movement toward facilitated Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings.

What is the Role of a Parent Leader? Parent Leaders are trained by PRN to attend ARD Meetings with parents. Their role is to help the parent prepare for the meeting, plan an agenda, identify the issues and support the collaborative process of the meeting. This also means assisting the parent and school reach a consensus where possible.  Parent Leaders are not advocates, but rather Partners in the ARD process. Parent Leaders are parents who have gone through a two day intensive Parent Leadership Training Program and are volunteers for Partners Resource Network (PRN).

What Does Parent Leadership Training Include? Leadership Skills, IDEA Information, Understanding the Procedural Safeguards, IEP/ARD Components, Transition, Early Childhood Education, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

Who is Parent Leadership For? It is for parents who want to become Leaders in helping other parents understand the ARD process and how to obtain the best education for their child. Leadership candidates must have a strong foundational knowledge of IDEA.

How do you become a Parent Leader? After attendance and completion of one all day training, two online Continuing Education Courses, and a follow-up training day held a few weeks after the initial training day, then the parent becomes certified as a Parent Leader.  If you would like to be added to our interest list, please contact our office at 806.762.1434 or penproject@sbcglobal.net.
