Learning Disability (LD)
There are three primary educational laws that impact children with learning disabilities they are the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504 (Section 504) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - IDEA gives states federal funds to help make special education services available for students with disabilities. It also provides very specific requirements to ensure a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with disabilities. FAPE is the protected right of every eligible child, in all 50 states and U.S. territories.
No Child Left Behind - The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) challenges states and school districts to intensify their efforts to improve the academic achievement of public school students considered at risk for school failure.
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) - Section 504 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Section 504 ensures that the child with a disability has equal access to an education. The child may receive accommodations and modifications within the classroom.
